STRESS IN CANADIAN WORKPLACES...
According to Statistics Canada the cost of work time lost to stress is more than $12 billion dollars per year with the Canadian Mental Health Association stating: "Emotional distress and mental illness account for 20-30% of all employee absenteeism and industrial accidents."
Mental Health Issues are an area of expertise for Organizational Solutions Inc.
The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number and length of claims related to employee mental health and the issue is a sensitive one concerning many employers. Economic hardship, longer working hours and the speed and volume of communications (eg. Email) have all added to the steady rise of work time lost due to reasons such as stress.
A large number of employees experience some degree of stress from time to time, work related or personal, but many people have coping mechanisms and can handle the added pressure in their lives. If managed correctly, stress can even be energizing and productive, enabling deadlines to be met for example.
Every employer knows though that Doctors will frequently write absence notes for stress leave, especially when symptoms include insomnia, change of eating habits, irritability or other common symptoms.
Many times, because the diagnosis is so subjective, employers are unable to manage or challenge these reasons for lost time or claims.

Because every individual is different there is no definitive guide to spotting all the signs of stress, and it is difficult to predict when it becomes an issue of concern with an individual.
Most people will experience some or all common symptoms from time to time and often it is nothing to be too concerned about. It is when symptoms lead to loss of productivity, lost time or workplace conflicts and attendance issues that employers see the negative impact on their business.
Some common indicators can be an employee's increased irritability, change of social habits with work colleagues, weight loss or gain, increased use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco or performance issues, among others.
